At two billion years old, the World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park is the jewel of Australia. Within the expansive park, mankind is enthralled by and working to preserve 1,600 plant varieties and a number of reptiles, birds, frogs, mammals and fish. There are an estimated 10,000 insect species with many of these insects rare or unnamed. Remnants of stone tools, shelters and ochre paintings that date back over 5,000 years are an important legacy to the area and a must see.

About 5,000 Aboriginal cultural sites have been identified. Most notable are rock art at Ubirr and Nourlangie Rock, featuring mouth-sprayed hand stencils that depict ancient Creation Era legends. Local indigenous tribes tell a history that spans a millennia through displays and art at the Warradjan Cultural Centre at Yellow Waters.
